Paul Merson: Why Arsenal are cheating their supporters
Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson says the Gunners should feel cheated after disappointing summer transfer window
Paul Merson has accused Arsenal of cheating their supporters by not making an offer for Real Madrid star Karim Benzema.
The Gunner were the only club in European football that failed to sign an outfield player in the summer transfer window.
The whole idea of going to this big stadium that holds 60,000 people was to bring in top quality players. I don’t know [why Arsenal aren’t spending the money]
Arsene Wenger snapped up 33-year-old Czech Republic international Petr Cech in an £11m deal from Premier League champions Chelsea.
The north London side were linked with a move for Benzema over the past month, but the speculation came to nothing.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson feels sorry for the club’s long-suffering supporters after another disappointing transfer window.
Merson told Sky Sports: “It cheats the fans. The fans think ‘what are we coming for? We turn up every week, we pay the highest prices and what for? Top four? We might get a day out at Wembley again in the FA Cup.’ Wow-wee.
“If you’re an Arsenal season ticket holder, you’re paying top dollar. It’s their money. It’s the fans’ money. It’s not Arsene Wenger’s money. It’s not the club’s money. It’s the fans’ money that they’ve paid to buy players.
“The whole idea of going to this big stadium that holds 60,000 people was to bring in top quality players. I don’t know [why Arsenal aren’t spending the money].
“Just put in a bid for Benzema. £75m. If Real Madrid turn around and say ‘we’re not selling him’, you can’t argue with that. You’ve put in a bid and if they turn it down or the lad doesn’t want to come, that’s the way it goes. But show something.”
Arsenal have won two of their opening four Premier League games this season.
The north London side were 1-0 winners against Newcastle United at St James’s Park on Saturday courtesy of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s deflected strike.
The Gunners have won back-to-back FA Cups after a 4-0 win against Aston Villa at Wembley in May.
