Paul Merson: Why Arsenal won’t beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge
The former Arsenal midfielder expects Chelsea to secure three points in the derby
Paul Merson has tipped Chelsea to beat Arsenal in their Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.
The Blues have made their worst start to an English top-flight campaign in 29 years after a return of four points from their opening five Premier League games.
I know Arsenal won in the Community Shield, but that was a bigger game for Arsenal than it was for Chelsea
However, Jose Mourinho’s side secured a morale-boosting 4-0 victory over Maccabi Tel-Aviv in their Champions League group-stage opener on Wednesday night.
Arsenal, meanwhile, may have 10 points from a possible 15 in the Premier League, but the Gunners head to west London following a surprise 2-1 defeat by Dinamo Zagreb in midweek.
Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Saturday’s London derby, Merson couldn’t see past a Chelsea victory despite their mixed start to the season.
“I have to go with Chelsea,” said Merson. “Their record against Arsenal is fantastic, they just don’t lose to them. I know Arsenal won in the Community Shield, but that was a bigger game for Arsenal than it was for Chelsea.
“Chelsea made changes in the Champions League, but they had a home game. Arsenal got it horribly wrong. Playing away you cannot make six changes. It was very naive of Arsene Wenger. You have to get off to a positive start, especially with Bayern Munich in the group.
“After what happened in midweek, it has swung all the pressure onto Arsenal, not Chelsea.”
The north London side did beat bitter rivals Chelsea 1-0 in the Community Shield at Wembley at the start of the season.
Arsenal haven’t won at Stamford Bridge during Mourinho’s two spells in charge of Chelsea.
