Paul Merson: Why Crystal Palace will beat Tottenham on Sunday
The former Arsenal midfielder is backing Crystal Palace to cause an upset at White Hart Lane
Paul Merson is tipping Crystal Palace to spring a surprise and claim victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Sunday.
The Lilywhites host the Eagles at White Hart Lane on the back of their 1-0 victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light last weekend.
Spurs followed up that win with a 3-1 victory over Qarabag in their Europa League group-stage opener on Thursday night.
Alan Pardew’s Palace have enjoyed a stunning start to the season and victories over the likes of Chelsea and Aston Villa have placed them sixth in the top-flight table heading into Sunday’s clash in north London.
And former Arsenal midfielder Merson feels that Palace have all the required attributes to trouble the home side and claim victory at White Hart Lane.
Merson told Sky Sports: “Tottenham fans are not going to be happy with me. I went with them last week at Sunderland, but not this week!
“After playing on Thursday, going up against Palace, who are flying and were unlucky against City, just plays into Palace’s hands away from home.
“It is not through bias, I just think Palace have the pace to catch Spurs. Tottenham fans are going to turn up and be begging their team to get forward. But there is no Ryan Mason, no Mousa Dembele, there are too many out.
“Spurs should have more points than they have, that’s true, but they haven’t and there must be a reason for that. Palace have just been to Chelsea and beat them well, and I’ll be backing them for a win here.”
Palace suffered a 1-0 loss to Premier League leaders Manchester City at Selhurst Park in their most recent top flight outing.
