Paul Merson: Why Man United must start David De Gea against Liverpool
Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson says Manchester United have to start David De Gea against Liverpool
Louis van Gaal will be chopping his nose off to spite his face if Manchester United manager doesn’t start David De Gea against Liverpool, according to Paul Merson.
The Spain international hasn’t featured in the Premier League this season after intense speculation linking De Gea with a big-money move to Real Madrid.
He has to play for me, he’s the best goalkeeper at the club by a million miles
However, a proposed transfer collapsed on La Liga’s deadline day and De Gea is facing a battle with Sergio Romero to reclaim United’s number one spot.
But former Arsenal midfielder Merson believes De Gea should start in United’s goal otherwise the Red Devils could lose to bitter rivals Liverpool.
“If this game goes anything like it did last season, and David de Gea doesn’t play for United, then Liverpool win this game without a doubt,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“There is no way Liverpool can have as many chances as they did back then and not win the game.
“That is why De Gea has to play. If not, you’re chopping your nose off to spite your face and United will struggle to come anywhere this season.
“Let’s be honest, United wouldn’t have come fourth last year without him. He has to play for me, he’s the best goalkeeper at the club by a million miles.”
United lost 2-1 to Swansea City in their most recent Premier League game after goals from Bafetimbi Gomis and Andre Ayew cancelled out Juan Mata’s opener.
Similarly, Liverpool also suffered their first Premier League defeat of the campaign after a 3-0 reversal at the hands of West Ham United at Anfield.
