Paul Merson: Why Man United will thrash Sunderland on Saturday

Paul Merson is tipping Manchester United to cruise to victory over Sunderland on Saturday...

Paul Merson is expecting Manchester United to run riot and secure a thumping win against Sunderland in the Premier League on Saturday.

Louis van Gaal’s men head into the game in fine form, having beaten Ipswich Town in the third round of the League Cup on Wednesday night to build on their 3-2 win over Southampton last weekend.

United’s form has been helped by Anthony Martial’s stunning start to life at Old Trafford since his transfer from Monaco on deadline day earlier this month.

The 19-year-old netted his fourth goal in as many games as Van Gaal’s men beat Ipswich 3-0 at Old Trafford.

And former Arsenal midfielder Merson feels that Martial could well find the score-sheet again on Saturday as the Red Devils look to keep pace with early Premier League leaders Manchester City.

Merson told Sky Sports: “Manchester United are grinding out results in truth, but this is a perfect game for them and should be a walk in the park.

“They didn’t play great at Southampton; the first 30 minutes they were all over the place. But I can’t see them not beating Sunderland comfortably.

“Anthony Martial is raw talent, and people would be lying if they said he hadn’t surprised them. I fancy him to score here again.

“Sunderland have to be careful what they do with Dick Advocaat, because they made him stay there essentially. Is it the manager, or is it the players?

“They haven’t recruited very well, but how much of that is down to Advocaat? Their first win could change everything, we’ve seen that from teams this season already. It changed complexion. But it isn’t coming at Old Trafford.

“United head into Saturday’s game in second place in the table and two points behind their local rivals City.”
