Paul Merson: Why Man United won’t beat Southampton on Sunday
The former Arsenal midfielder is expecting Manchester United to struggle to break down Southampton
Paul Merson is expecting Manchester United to be held to a draw by Southampton in their Premier League clash at St Mary’s on Sunday.
The Red Devils slumped to a 2-1 loss to PSV Eindhoven in their Champions League group-stage opener on Tuesday night, as they also lost defender Luke Shaw for a considerable period to a broken leg.
Louis van Gaal’s men moved up to second place in the Premier League table thanks to an impressive 3-1 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford last weekend.
However, former Arsenal midfielder Merson feels that United’s stuttering performances this season point to the Red Devils struggling to be able to take the three points against the Saints this weekend.
Merson told Sky Sports: “Southampton haven’t really got going. They were unlucky at West Brom, but they are getting better.
“Man United keep winning, but I just don’t see them doing it here. They lost at PSV, and Luke Shaw is a massive miss. I don’t know what it is about United, they have some good players but it is just isn’t clicking.
“Southampton brushed aside Norwich and improved against West Brom. They are getting players back and starting to get a bit of confidence. Southampton have to score first if they are going to get anything from this.”
Manchester United have won three, drawn one and lost one of their opening five Premier League games to leave them five points behind early pace-setters and local rivals Manchester City in the top-flight table.
