Paul Merson: Why Tottenham will finish outside top six this season
Former Arsenal playmaker Paul Merson is tipping Tottenham Hotspur to finish in eighth place this season
Tottenham Hotspur will finish outside the Premier League’s top six this season, according to Paul Merson.
The north London side are still waiting for their first Premier League win of the new season after three draws and a defeat.
Mauricio Pochettino signed four players in the summer transfer window, including Belgium defender Toby Alderweireld.
However, former Arsenal midfielder Merson believes Tottenham will be left to rue their failure to sign West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino.
Merson told Sky Sports: “I think they needed a forward. If they’d bought Saido Berahino, I’d have moved them up a couple of spaces, but there’s too much pressure on Harry Kane.
“He hasn’t scored yet, and I know last year he scored in November and scored 30 goals, but surely not this year as well?”
Spurs suffered a 1-0 loss to top-four rivals Manchester United on the opening day of the Premier League season after a Kyle Walker own goal.
Tottenham followed up their Old Trafford defeat with a 1-1 draw with Leicester City, a point against Stoke City following a 2-2 result and a goalless stalemate with Everton.
The north London side make the trip to Sunderland in their next Premier League outing on Sunday afternoon.
