The Manchester United midfielder knows Wolfsburg all too well
Bastian Schweinsteiger has warned Manchester United that Wolfsburg will be “very tough opponents” in the Champions League at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
The Red Devils are bidding to secure their first European win of the Champions League group stage after a humbling 2-1 defeat by Eredivisie holders PSV Eindhoven earlier this month.
Group B opponents Wolfsburg, meanwhile, eased to a 1-0 victory over Russian outfit CSKA Moscow courtesy of Julian Draxler’s first-half winner.
And Schweinsteiger, who regularly faced Wolfsburg during a 13-year career at former employers Bayern Munich, took to Instagram to rally the United troops on Wednesday afternoon.
Schweinsteiger wrote on the photo-sharing app: “A tough match against an opponent I know very well. #UCL #mufc”
United’s overall home record against sides from Germany is won eight, drawn four and lost two.
This is the first time United have entered their second game of a Champions League campaign without a point since 1996-97, when they started with a 1-0 loss at Juventus.
Draxler was in the Schalke side beaten by United in the 2010-11 Champions League semi-finals.
