Former England captain David Beckham posts Instagram message dedicated to record-breaker Wayne Rooney
David Beckham has sent a message of congratulations to England’s new record goal-scorer Wayne Rooney.
The 29-year-old notched up his 50th goal for the England national team on Tuesday night after a 84th-minute penalty in a 2-0 victory over Switzerland.
Rooney’s spot-kick saw the England and United captain surpass Sir Bobby Charlton’s long-standing record of 49 goals for the Three Lions.
And Beckham, who has made more England appearances than any other outfield player – 115, watched former team-mate Rooney make history at Wembley last night.
Beckham posted the above clip and wrote on his Instagram page: “50 goals for England and many more to come from our captain .. Always wants to win and plays with passion ..”
The former United midfielder’s son Romeo led England out alongside Rooney for their Euro 2016 qualifier last night.
Beckham captained England 58 times after he was named Three Lions skipper by caretaker manager Peter Taylor in 2000.
The retired United, Real Madrid, AC Milan, LA Galaxy and Paris Saint-Germain midfielder scored 17 times in 115 games for England.
