Porto 2 Chelsea 1: Jose Mourinho blasts ‘ridiculous’ defending
Jose Mourinho was left unimpressed by Chelsea's defending during their 2-1 loss to Porto in the Champions League
Jose Mourinho criticised Chelsea for conceding two “ridiculous” goals as the Blues were beaten 2-1 by Porto in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
Andre Andre gave Porto the lead six minutes before half-time when he volleyed home after Asmir Begovic parried Yacine Brahimi’s effort.
Chelsea equalised before the break when Willian struck a stunning free-kick from the edge of the area.
But the Premier League champions fell behind once again seven minutes after half-time when Maicon’s flicked header at the near post beat Begovic.
And Mourinho felt that the game was an even affair, apart from his side’s sloppy defending.
The Chelsea boss said on BT Sport after the game: “We watch dozens and dozens of repetitions of Porto taking corners. We were completely ready for that and in a moment when the game is under control we concede a goal that is ridiculous.
“They hit the post from a similar mistake. Apart from that the game was balanced. Two ridiculous moments and we were punished.
“The most basic thing in football is a defensive set-play. We had chances after that to get a positive result and we had a clear penalty – so for me I am not here to criticise the players.
“I am not going to point the finger but two mistakes cost us the game. The team played well against a difficult opponent. The Champions League brings a different atmosphere.”
The defeat left Chelsea third in Champions League Group G behind leaders Porto and second-placed Dynamo Kiev.
The west London side next face back-to-back games against Dynamo Kiev as they look to get their campaign in Europe’s elite club competition back on track.
