Sir Alex Ferguson lifts lid on Man United’s failed pursuit of Bayern Munich star
Sir Alex Ferguson reveals that Manchester United came close to signing Thomas Muller as a youngster
Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that Manchester United were interested in signing Thomas Muller – when he was just 10 years old.
The Bayern Munich star was touted as a possible target for Louis van Gaal’s United side during the summer transfer window but a move failed to materialise.
Now, it has emerged that the Red Devils had been keeping a close eye on the World Cup winner long before his breakthrough years.
Writing in his new book, Leading, Ferguson revealed that United’s scouts had been keeping tabs on Muller when he was 10, but the player soon committed his future to Bayern Munich.
Ferguson, who retired at the end of the 2012-13 season, wrote: “He was a 10-year-old when we heard about him.
“We had him watched and the following day he committed himself to Bayern Munich.”
Manchester United take on Ipswich Town in the third round of the League Cup on Wednesday night.
Van Gaal’s Red Devils side are currently second in the Premier League table and just two points behind bitter local rivals and early pace-setters Manchester City.
