Southampton 2 Man Utd 3: Player ratings as Anthony Martial shines

Player ratings as Anthony Martial and Juan Mata fire Manchester United up to second place in the Premier League

By Jonathan Spencer

Maarten Stekelenburg The Dutchman could not do anything about Anthony Martial’s or Juan Mata’s goals 6/10

Maya Yoshida Terrible back pass to put Anthony Martial through on goal and he duly punished the Japanese defender’s mistake 4

Jose Fonte Needed to be more demanding for United’s first goal. He should have cleared the danger when he had the chance but instead the ball ran through to Mata before it found Martial 5

Virgil van Dijk After a solid first half performance, he found it difficult in the last 45 minutes as the midfield and defence was stretched 6

Matt Targett Provided his side with an attacking threat down the left hand side and linked up well with Tadic. However, as first half went on, he lost freedom going forward. Came off at half time injured 6

Victor Wanyama The Kenyan applied much pressure on United’s attacking players in the first half but again, like his teammates, had less to shout about in the last 45 and found it difficult to contain the opposition’s threat 6

Oriol Romeu Solid in the middle during the first half but was substituted not long into the second half when they were chasing the game 6

James Ward-Prowse Provided the forwards with some great deliveries throughout the first half and played an instrumental part in their first goal, whipping in a brilliant cross for Sadio Mane. Had less impact in second half and was called on more defensively 7

Sadio Mane Put in a brilliant shift for his team. He nearly found the net before Pelle slotted home. Also created the second with a brilliant cross to set up Graziano Pelle with a free header 7

Dusan Tadic Good link up with Mane early on in the match. However, lost his impact soon after and did not really trouble Man Utd’s defence in the remainder of the match 6

Graziano Pelle Scored both goals for Southampton and will be vital for the team this season. He caused the opposition defence many problems during the first half with his strength 8

Cuco Martina He found it hard down the left hand side during the second half and it was clear to see he could not get into the game 5

Steven Davis Did not impact the game when he came on with just over 30 minutes to go. Had the ball stolen away from him by Shane Long in the dying stages just before he was about to pull the trigger 6

Shane Long Had nothing of note to do in the last 15 minutes N/A

Man Utd

David De Gea Nothing he could do to stop Pelle scoring twice. He made fantastic saves to deny both Fonte and Wanyama equalising goals for Southampton 8

Matteo Darmian Had a solid game dealing with the threat of Tadic down the right. However, went off at half time with no injury to report 6

Chris Smalling Looked shaky at the back early on and should have been much tighter to Pelle for his second goal. He gave the Italian way too much space for a free header 6

Daley Blind Could have tracked back quicker for Southampton’s first goal and did not close down Mane well for Southampton’s second goal 5

Marcos Rojo Struggled with Southampton’s threat down the left hand side in the first half. He was substituted halfway through the second half 5

Michael Carrick: Slow to come to terms with Mane’s pace and movement early in the first half. He did then sure up in midfield and looked calm both with the ball and in defence 6

Morgan Schneiderlin Similar to Carrick, he struggled with Mane early on. However, he looked more solid and was not truly troubled until the late stages of the game 6

Juan Mata Scored Uniteds’s third goal with a tidy finish from just inside the area. He also benefitted from having plenty of movement in front of him 7

Wayne Rooney Played a back role throughout the match and his striking partner Anthony Martial stole the show. Needs to re-find his goal scoring form 6

Memphis Depay Always looked like he could cause problems today. Was influential for his sides third goal, finding space in the box before hitting the post. Fortunately Mata was on hand to put the game out of reach 7

Anthony Martial (Man of the match) Scored the first two goals for United. Two very composed finishes and the Frenchman has settled into Premier League life well 8

Antonio Valencia A very comfortable half after replacing Darmian at half time. He was rarely troubled in defence 6

Bastian Schweinsteiger Composed on the ball when he came on. The German was hardly called on defensively 6

Paddy McNair Between both him and Smalling, they should have got much closer to Pelle to prevent the second goal 5
