Steven Gerrard lifts lid on Liverpool’s failed attempt to sign Real Madrid star
Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard reveals his attempts to lure Germany midfielder Toni Kroos to Anfield
Steven Gerrard has lifted the lid on Liverpool’s attempt to sign Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos.
The former Reds captain was asked by manager Brendan Rodgers to get in touch with the Germany international before the midfielder made a decision on his Bayern Munich future.
I knew Real Madrid were gearing up to make Bayern Munich an offer and so I felt a bit awkward when I texted Kroos. But God loves a trier and so I gave it a whirl
Kroos was also linked with a move to Arsenal and Manchester United before the World Cup winner eventually completed a £15m move to 10-time European Cup winners Madrid last summer.
And Gerrard, who moved to Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy in the summer transfer window, admitted Liverpool were over ambitious in their bid to sign the German playmaker.
“Our target in 2014 was ridiculously optimistic. Brendan (Rodgers, Liverpool manager) asked me to take a crack at trying to talk Toni Kroos into signing for Liverpool,” Gerrard wrote in his new autobiography, My Story, which is currently being serialised in the Daily Mail.
“I knew Real Madrid were gearing up to make Bayern Munich an offer and so I felt a bit awkward when I texted Kroos. But God loves a trier and so I gave it a whirl.
“Some of the best footballers in the world can also be the most respectful. Kroos did not make me feel like I was a total idiot. But, of course, he would soon sign for Real.”
Gerrard also revealed his attempts to convince Willian to join Liverpool ahead of Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur before the Brazil international opted to move to Stamford Bridge.
The Reds signed Christian Benteke and Roberto Firmino in the summer transfer window in big-money deals.
