Steven Gerrard reveals Jose Mourinho letter after Liverpool exit
Steven Gerrard reveals that Jose Mourinho sent him a letter wishing him well after his Liverpool exit
Steven Gerrard has described Jose Mourinho as a class act after the Chelsea manager sent the former England captain a letter following his decision to leave Liverpool this summer.
Gerrard called time on his decorated Anfield career at the end of last season as he opted to leave Merseyside to join MLS outfit LA Galaxy.
Just for him to take the time out to write that letter shows his class
Mourinho tried to bring Gerrard to Stamford Bridge during his first spell in charge at Chelsea but a move failed to materialise.
Now, Gerrard has revealed how the Portuguese coach underlined his respect for the midfielder by admitting that he regrets not having been able to work with the Liverpool legend.
Asked about the letter Mourinho sent to him via John Terry, Gerrard told BT Sport: “Congratulations on a wonderful career, he said he had a regret he didn’t work with me on a daily basis.
“He just told me to be really proud of what I achieved and to enjoy my family every day were the key messages that I took from it.
“Just for him to take the time out to write that letter shows his class. It was a nice touch at the time.”
Gerrard continued: “He is one of the best out there and he’s tried to sign me on three occasions, three different teams.
“Even though I haven’t played for him, I’ve had that close relationship with him and I’ve still felt he rates me as a player and even bumping into him when the rivalry’s been going on, he’s given me some good bits of advice. I’m a big fan.”
Liverpool, who are 13th in the table, return to Premier League action when they host Aston Villa at Anfield on Saturday afternoon, before Chelsea travel to Newcastle United in the top flight.
