Three reasons why Philippe Coutinho is key for Liverpool
Shona Duthie looks at three reasons why Philippe Coutinho is going to be key for Liverpool this season
It was fairly clear to Liverpool fans and other neutral supporters that Philippe Coutinho helped guide Liverpool to two wins on the trot at the start of the season. His wonder strike in the 86th minute against Stoke and how he played in the 1-0 victory over Bournemouth was impressive for fans to watch. It is clear to see that the Brazil international has an abundance of talent and can be capable of great things at Liverpool. Steven Gerrard moved to MLS side LA Galaxy this summer and Coutinho has been tipped to take on a bigger role at Liverpool. Coutinho has underlined his worth and can continue to do so for the Merseyside club.
Qualities to be a leader
Coutinho is already highly regarded by all his team–mates and with his quiet and unassuming character, he has quickly became an instant fan favourite. The 23-year-old has made more passes in the final third, more dribbles and had more shots than any other player at the club in 2014-15. He scored five goals and five assists and that is a relatively low count for a player of quality. However, with the right teammates around him, he can certainly produce moments of magic. These moments certainly make the difference and he creates moments out of nowhere, he is now seen as a leader at the club. With this in mind he can certainly springboard Liverpool and is a valuable player for the Reds.
Ambition to do more
It was reported recently that Coutinho wanted to do more in his game in terms of improving his finishing. He plays in a position where that can happen and he feels that he needs to score more to help the team. There was talk that he would not be able to handle the pressure of being deemed the future of Liverpool, but it seems the young talented player is willing to take this on. If he continues to improve his scoring as well as still create plays and assists for his teammates then this is the main reason why he is a key player for Liverpool. He could become one of the best Premier League midfielders in years to come.
