Tottenham 1 Arsenal 2: Player ratings as Mathieu Flamini nets winner

Player ratings as Arsenal edge to victory over Tottenham in League Cup

By Shona Duthie

Tottenham Hotspur

Michel Vorm Unfortunately his initial save for the first goal was undesirable to watch for Spurs fans as he palmed the ball into the direction of Flamini. Redeemed himself in the second half as he made some good saves and was rarely challenged, was not to blame for the second goal. 5/10

Kieran Trippier Was nervy in defence. Didn’t help Pochettino after he was criticised for changing his defence from the Premier League for the League Cup. 4

Federico Fazio Went missing when Arsenal scored the first goal of the game. Spurs may need to keep an eye on this in the future. 4

Kevin Wimmer Rarely went forward and wasn’t tested much throughout the game. 4

Danny Rose Was the key to Spurs defence all evening and caused a rusty Debuchy some problems. 6

Eric Dier Never seemed to be in the game. He was missing figure for the Spurs midfield before being substituted. 3

Tom Carroll Did well throughout the first half. Created good chances and had some good passes to his teammates. 6

Andros Townsend Committed a needless challenge on Campbell in the first half. Never got into the game before being substituted. 4

Nacer Chadli Had a chance in the first half but could not find his way through the Gunners defence before being substituted in the second half. 5

Christian Eriksen Eriksen was Spurs’s ray of light. His slick passes were incredible all evening and was key to Tottenham’s equaliser. 7

Harry Kane Had a few chances in the first half but could not convert some easy chances and was unlucky not to score after Gibbs cleared off the line. 6

Dele Alli Was not long on the pitch and received a yellow card. N/A

David Ospina Made some great saves in the first half. He is proving to be a great number two to Petr Cech. He was more composed than Vorm, would have been equal to Spurs’s effort for the first goal but for Chambers’s touch. He was not to blame. 6

Mathieu Debuchy It was obvious that he has not had a lot of game time as in-form Bellerin gets the nod ahead of the Frenchmen in the Premier League. He did not keep up with Rose’s pace. 4

Per Mertesacker Composed in the defence. However, he was nowhere to be seen when Spurs scored but was disallowed for offside was lucky to be let off with the challenge. It was shown Arsenal may have missed their captain. 6

Calum Chambers Chambers made some impressive defensive saves for the away side. Unfortunately, the youngster is still not a ready-made centre-half and deflected a shot into his own net. 5

Kieran Gibbs Was missing for the first half as he rarely touched the ball. But he pushed further up the pitch more in the second half. 5

Mikel Arteta Yellow carded early in the first half for a high challenge on Rose. Many may feel it was not needed. Was quite solid in Arsenal’s midfield. 6

Mathieu Flamini (man of the match) His instincts kicked in and scored the rebound after Vorm spilled his first save. He was booked for a pointless challenge before half-time. Out of nowhere, he managed to score the second goal with a volley into the bottom right corner. He was Arsenal’s unlikely hero. 8

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain Made sure he caused Spurs defence problems in the first half. He was unlucky not to score after Vorm saved his shot but never gave up throughout the game. Subbed before 90 minutes. 6

Aaron Ramsey Made some good runs, however, guilty of sloppy passes that affected his game. Spurs had the momentum in the second half and Ramsey struggled. 5

Joel Campbell Tried to impress manager Arsene Wenger but he did struggle to help Debuchy with Rose’s pace down the right wing before being substituted in the second half. 5

Oliver Giroud Things are not going the Arsenal striker’s way at the moment. He struggled to make the ball work for him. 4

Alexis Sanchez Created an immediate impact when he came on the pitch and was a part of the second goal scored. 5
