Van Gaal gives latest Man United injury update after win over Liverpool
Wayne Rooney could miss Manchester United's Champions League clash with PSV due to injury
Wayne Rooney could miss Manchester United’s Champions League clash with PSV Eindhoven in midweek due to injury, Louis van Gaal has revealed.
The Manchester United captain sat out Saturday’s 3-1 win over Liverpool in the Premier League because of an undisclosed minor problem picked up in training last week.
Van Gaal insisted that the England skipper’s injury is not too serious but hinted that he is likely not to risk him for Tuesday’s Champions League group opener away to PSV.
Speaking to MUTV on Saturday after United’s win at Old Trafford, Van Gaal said: “He is injured so we have to take care of him.
“I think he is very important for us and I don’t to take any risks so that’s why he doesn’t play today.
“I don’t think he will play against PSV Eindhoven, but maybe he shall play at Southampton. We have to wait and see if he can play against PSV because we still have three days to go.”
Goals from Daley Blind, Ander Herrera and Anthony Martial handed United a 3-1 victory over their local rivals on Saturday.
Saturday’s win over Liverpool hoisted Manchester United up to second place in the Premier League table, five points behind early leaders Manchester City after five games.
The Red Devils’ next top-flight game is a trip to Southampton next Sunday afternoon.
