Ander Herrera is “crazy” about football and is constantly thinking about the game, his Manchester United team-mate Juan Mata has revealed.

The Spanish midfielder has been a big hit at Old Trafford since his transfer to the Red Devils from Athletic Bilbao last summer.

Herrera made 30 Premier League appearances for the Red Devils last season, scoring seven goals to help United wrap up a top-four finish and qualification for the Champions League.

And Mata, who is good friends with Herrera away from football, has admitted that he is often bored into submission by his team-mate’s talks about the game.

Mata told MUTV: “As a player everyone can see how well he did for us last season. Your first season is never easy, especially coming to England to such a big club with the pressure and expectations.

“But he did very well and scored a lot of goals and was very good in a lot of games, playing well and linking things up. We used to play together a lot for the Spanish Under-21 national team so we know each other very well, but yes he’s crazy about football.

“You can be speaking about something else and then suddenly he will say, ‘do you know that player from the Italian league playing in the second division?!’ He just knows about everything!

“He’s crazy about football but in a good way because the football he likes and understands is the same kind I like. We live very close to each other so we spend a lot of time together.”

The Spaniard is currently sidelined with a minor knee injury but has been working on his fitness at the club’s Carrington training base during the international break.

However, he will be hoping to be fit when United take on Everton in their next Premier League game at Goodison Park at the weekend.
