Arsenal

Petr Cech (Man of the match)

Brilliant save to deny Thiago Alcantara from close range in the 11th minute. Alert to push Arturo Vidal’s attempt to safety midway through the first half. Only served to highlight Arsene Wenger’s bizarre decision to leave Cech out of his side for the 3-2 loss to Olympiacos earlier this month after making a total of six saves. 9

Nacho Monreal Didn’t close down the Bayern front five. On the back foot most of the game. 6

Per Mertesacker In what many predicted would be a difficult night for the German, the centre-half wasn’t overly exposed by the Bayern attack. Occasionally dragged out of position due to the movement of Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski. 6

Laurent Koscielny A very good defender at Premier League level, but Koscielny can look exposed against Europe’s best. Regularly dragged out of position by Muller’s cunning movement. But his pace often bails the Frenchman out of danger and made a brilliant challenge to deny Lewandowski in the 75th minute. Vital interception to rob the ball from the Pole in added time. 8

Héctor Bellerín Didn’t get tight enough to Bayern’s runners. Embarrassed by Douglas Costa in the first half as the Brazilian produced a piece of magic to leave the youngster in his wake. Didn’t get any better for the Spaniard in the second half as Thiago left the full-back dazed with his sublime skill. Had the last laugh, though, as his searing pace saw the 20-year-old race past the Bayern defence to tee up Ozil in added time. 7

Santi Cazorla The pint-sized Arsenal midfielder struggled alongside Coquelin trying to get tight to Bayern’s superior midfielders. 6

Francis Coquelin Spent most of the night chasing shadows. A thankless task as the Bayern midfield bypassed the Frenchman. 6

Mesut Özil The German World Cup winner drew an early save from his compatriot Manuel Neuer. Couldn’t replicate his recent performances against Manchester United and Watford, but contributed to an important Champions League win. Added a second right at the end after it looked like Neuer had produced another brilliant save to deny his compatriot. 7

Theo Walcott When he eventually broke through the Bayern defensive line, Jerome Boateng bailed out his team-mates. Minutes later, the England striker came even closer but Neuer produced one of the most memorable saves in Champions League history to deny Walcott. Still a doubt over his finishing ability in Arsenal’s biggest fixtures. 7

Aaron Ramsey Spent most of the night attempting to close down the Bayern players. Sadly, the Welshman had to be withdrawn after a suspected hamstring injury. 6

Alexis Sánchez When the ball fell to the in-form Chilean from a corner, he was primed to finish past Neuer. Uncharacteristically blasted his attempt over the crossbar. An error in the second half nearly resulted in a Bayern opener. 6

Substitutions

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain Seamlessly replaced Ramsey. A willing runner as Arsenal sought to see out the game. 6

Olivier Giroud Came off the bench to score Arsenal’s winner. Replays showed that he was a tad fortunate to escape without being penalised for a handball. 7
