Arsenal deal to sign Man United man was ‘done’ before Wenger’s U-turn
Arsene Wenger was keen on bringing Morgan Schneiderlin to Arsenal before having a change of heart
Arsenal were on the verge of signing Morgan Schneiderlin from Southampton before Arsene Wenger had a change of heart, according to The Secret Footballer.
The north London side were heavily linked with a big money swoop to sign the midfielder during the summer transfer window, but the France international ended up joining Manchester United.
Arsenal were also reported to have been keeping tabs on Son Heung-min before he eventually signed for their local rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window.
Now, The Secret Footballer has claimed that the “frighteningly indecisive” Wenger was keen on signing both players before changing his mind at the last minute in both cases.
He wrote on his website: “I met up with my friend, an Arsenal scout, last week.
“I pointed out that Tottenham Hotspur’s summer recruit, Son Heung-min, is one of the most impressive players I’ve seen at White Hart Lane since Gareth Bale.
“Immediately, the scout took his phone out of his pocket and showed me a scouting report from last season.
“Arsenal watched Son almost 30 times last season, with all the scouts in agreement that the player would be a fantastic addition.
“So what happened?
“It’s Arsene,” the scout said. “He’s so indecisive it’s frightening. We had [Morgan] Schneiderlin done and dusted last January and, by the summer, the gaffer had changed his mind.
“Son was 100 per cent perfect for us.”
Arsenal, who are second in the Premier League, were one of the only top teams in Europe not to sign any outfield players during the summer transfer window, with Wenger opting only to bring in Petr Cech from Chelsea.
