Didier Deschamps believes that Olivier Giroud is suffering from a lack of confidence due to his limited playing time for Arsenal this season.

Arsene Wenger has preferred to deploy Theo Walcott in the central striker position for the Gunners in the opening few weeks of the campaign, with Giroud being limited to a handful of substitute appearances.

To make matters worse, the French striker was also sent off during Arsenal’s surprise Champions League defeat by Dinamo Zagreb last month.

However, despite acknowledging that Giroud is struggling, Deschamps is backing the forward to rediscover his form in the coming weeks and months.

“He’s in a tough position,” London 24 quotes Deschamps as saying.

“It’s a difficult period for him. His game time is less important, his confidence has gone down and he could have played better for us the last time he featured.

“It’s all part of one season. He’s here because I have faith in him. He hasn’t lost his qualities overnight.”

The 19-year-old Giroud has scored three Premier League goals in eight top flight appearances for Wenger’s side so far this term.

However, the forward has made just three league starts for the Gunners and was forced to settle for a spot on the bench during Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday.
