Per Mertesacker says Arsenal star Theo Walcott is proving a real threat to opposition defences in his new centre-forward role.

The England international produced an influential performance in a 3-0 victory over bitter rivals Manchester United at The Emirates before the international break, although Walcott failed to get on the score sheet against the Red Devils.

In the centre he is always one against two, so he needs to find his way and his spaces and the pockets where he can be dangerous

However, the 26-year-old striker did make two assists in the landslide victory against Louis van Gaal’s side, taking his tally to four goals and three assists in eight games in all competitions this season.

Walcott is one of England’s form strikers after having scored seven times in nine outings for club and country, and Arsenal defender Mertesacker believes Walcott is providing Premier League defences with a real headache.

“It is a different position that what he played before on the wing,” Mertesacker is quoted as saying by The Mirror.

“In the centre he is always one against two, so he needs to find his way and his spaces and the pockets where he can be dangerous.

“That will always be more in behind [the defence], forcing [the opposition] to go back because they will always be scared, if Theo plays up front, of the space in behind.”

The Arsenal striker will be hoping to add to his Premier League tally when Arsene Wenger’s side make the short trip to Vicarage Road to face newly-promoted Watford on Saturday afternoon.
