Arsene Wenger has hinted that he may rest Alexis Sanchez for Arsenal’s trip to Watford on Saturday to “protect” the forward.

The 26-year-old is due to return to the north London club from international duty with Chile on Thursday as he turns his attentions back to Arsenal.

Sanchez has been in sparkling form for both club and country in recent weeks and scored twice as Arsenal beat Manchester United 3-0 in the Premier League clash before the international break.

Now, Wenger has suggested that the former Barcelona star could do with a rest ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash at Watford.

Wenger told a news conference at Emirates Stadium on Thursday morning: “Let’s see what happens and how he comes back.

“We have to see if we have to protect him in our next game or not.”

Arsenal’s win over Manchester United before the international break left Wenger’s men second in the table and two points behind leaders Manchester City after eight games.

Sanchez has scored five Premier League goals for the Gunners this season despite returning to the club late after being on Copa America duty over the summer.
