Arsene Wenger runs rule over Arsenal’s forgotten striker
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger backs Joel Campbell to prove his quality
Arsene Wenger has backed Arsenal striker Joel Campbell to seize his chance to impress against Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup on Tuesday night.
The Costa Rica international hasn’t played in the Premier League this season after falling behind Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott in the pecking order at the north London club.
“I’m convinced he will get a chance here and that he will take it
The 23-year-old scored one goal in 14 La Liga appearances for Villarreal during a season-long loan at the Yellow Submarine.
Arsenal manager Wenger, whose side are second in the Premier League table, believes Campbell will show that he is good enough for the Gunners against the Owls in the Capital One Cup.
“I like Joel Campbell very much for two reasons,” Wenger is quoted as saying.
“One is that he has outstanding individual quality, but he is also a team player. He works very hard for the team.
“I’m convinced he will get a chance here and that he will take it. He has another opportunity against Sheffield Wednesday and I’m hopeful that he will show that he has the quality to play for Arsenal.”
Arsenal forward Campbell has failed to score a goal in 20 appearances in all competitions for the north London side.
The Costa Rican striker was impressed at the 2014 World Cup after he netted one goal in four appearances in the summer tournament.
