Barcelona legend backs Jack Wilshere to ‘make the difference’ for Arsenal
Xavi runs rule over Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere
Jack Wilshere can make the difference for Arsenal and England, according to Barcelona legend Xavi.
The 23-year-old midfielder is currently sidelined after the Gunners star suffered a hairline fracture in his leg in pre-season training the day before the north London side’s Community Shield triumph.
He is really talented, gifted for passing and he does not give the ball away
Speaking to Sky Sports’s Goals on Sunday, Wilshere revealed that he is making good progress as the England international looks to return to Arsene Wenger’s first-team affairs.
Former Barcelona midfielder Xavi, who is a three-time Champions League winner, explained why he has always been impressed with the Arsenal playmaker.
“He played a fantastic game against us [in 2011]. Let’s not forget he was just 20 or 21 years old. It’s just a shame he got injured so many times over the past two years,” Xavi told Sport.
“If he gets going and a bit of continuity as well, he may make the difference for both Arsenal and the English national team. He is a different kind of English player.
“Even though he has been nourished in a physical type of football, he is really talented, gifted for passing and he does not give the ball away. He does not seem to be English!”
Wilshere was part of the Arsenal side that secured a famous 2-1 victory over Xavi’s Barcelona side at The Emirates in 2011.
However, the World Cup winner and his Barca team-mates exacted revenge in the return leg as the midfielder sealed their progress from the penalty spot after Lionel Messi’s brace.
