Bastian Schweinsteiger has spoken of his excitement ahead of Manchester United’s derby showdown with Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The German World Cup winner is gearing up for his first taste of a Manchester derby when Louis van Gaal’s men host their bitter local rivals this weekend.

Schweinsteiger, who joined United from Bayern Munich over the summer, is relishing Sunday’s encounter – and admits that he did not play in enough derbies during his time in the Bundesliga.

Schweinsteiger told United Review: “I am definitely looking forward to the derby against City.

“I think it is something very special and we should be very happy that we have two big clubs in one city that are also playing in the Champions League.

“I remember when I was in Munich we were always looking for that, but the other team at 1860 Munich didn’t play so well!

“[Laughs] We were always looking for a derby but it was sadly not possible. Here, we can play lots of derbies and I am very happy about that.”

United head into the game knowing that victory over Manuel Pellegrini’s Premier League leaders would move them above their neighbours in the table.

The Red Devils are currently in third place in the table and two points behind the Citizens.

United warmed up for Sunday’s game with a 1-1 draw with CSKA Moscow in the Champions League, while City left it late to beat Sevilla 2-1 at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.
