Charlie Nicholas believes that Manchester United are on course to be held to a 1-1 draw by CSKA Moscow in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils take on their Russian opponents looking to notch up their second win of the group stage in Europe’s elite club competition after their victor over Wolfsburg in their most recent Champions League outing.

United head into the game on the back of their 3-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon.

And despite Louis van Gaal’s side going into the clash in decent shape, former Arsenal man Nicholas feels that the Russian side will prove to be tricky opposition.

Nicholas told Sky Sports: “I have to say United surprised me at Goodison Park and that is a really stunning result for them to bounce back from their 3-0 defeat at the Emirates, producing such an impressive win.

“It was important for Wayne Rooney to get a goal and, while Anthony Martial is beginning to settle down a bit and Memphis Depay isn’t really capturing my imagination in terms of fitting into the system, I do quite like it when Ander Herrera and Morgan Schneiderlin play together.

“I do think United will get something but this is a difficult game and I think they’d be happy to get a draw.”

The Premier League outfit have lost their last three away games in the Champions League proper, although they did win 4-0 at Club Brugge in the play-offs.

United, who are third in the Premier League table and two points behind Manchester City, have won only one of seven matches, home and away, against Russian opposition.
