Charlie Nicholas is backing Stoke City to spring a surprise and beat Chelsea in the League Cup fourth round on Tuesday night.

The struggling Blues travel to the Britannia Stadium on the back of their fifth Premier League defeat of the season following their 2-1 loss to West Ham United at Upton Park last weekend.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has found himself in the unfamiliar position of being under intense pressure in recent weeks following his side’s stuttering start to the season.

Reports in the British media this week have claimed that Mourinho could be sacked by the west London club if the Blues are beaten by Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Former Arsenal star Nicholas is predicting Tuesday night’s League Cup clash to end in a 1-1 draw – and the home side to triumph on penalties.

Nicholas told Sky Sports: “Mark Hughes will be thinking this is a good time to play Chelsea, especially at home. Should he rest too many when they haven’t been playing too well anyway?

“I watched Stoke at the weekend and in all honesty they were poor and I thought they were poor on Monday Night Football as well, when they beat Swansea 1-0. I just think their passing has gone right off the boil.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if this was a score draw then potentially Stoke to win in extra-time or on the flip of a coin which is penalties.”
