Chelsea 1 Southampton 3: Player ratings as John Terry struggles

Player ratings as Chelsea slump to another Premier League defeat at the hands of Southampton

Chelsea

Asmir Begovic Good save to block Bertrand’s shot but he could do little about Davis’s equaliser or Mane’s winner. 6/10

Branislav Ivanovic The Serbian defender was very lucky not to cap his season horribilis after he attempted to swap shirts with Van Dijk. Tormented by Tadic. 5

Gary Cahill Flirted with Begovic’s goal when he made a vital clearance to deny Mane. Played his part in Mane’s second goal for Southampton after a poor touch from a throw-in. Uncharacteristically poor. 3

John Terry The Chelsea captain was restored to the line-up after a three-game absence. What looked to be a seemless return to the line-up was ruined after he was mercilessly turned by Mane for the winner. 4

Cesar Azpilicueta Once again, the only Chelsea defender to emerge with a shred of credit. 5

Ramires The midfielder was fortunate to escape punishment after he appeared to bring down Mane in the area. 5

Cesc Fabregas A much perkier display from the Spanish playmaker. His lack of defensive nous exposed by Southampton’s marauding midfielders. 5

Willian The Brazilian continued his goal-scoring with a superb free-kick to break the deadlock. Otherwise, he was subdued. 7

Oscar Had a 25th-minute attempt that was aimed straight at Stekelenberg. Didn’t really influence the game. 5

Eden Hazard A lively performance. Still well short of his performances from last season. 6

Radamel Falcao Always a presence in the Southampton area, but Falcao couldn’t quite manufacture the space needed to unleash a shot. Booked for diving. Perhaps a little harsh, but he tried to manufacture the contact. 6

Substitutes

Nemanja Matic Embarrassingly, he lasted a 20 odd minutes before he was replaced. 4

Southampton

Maarten Stekelenburg The Dutch goalkeeper should have been better positioned for Willian’s opener. Otherwise, up to the task. 6

Cedric Soares The French full-back looked nervous in the opening moments of the game but grew into the game. 6

Jose Fonte As is expected, the Saints captain was a calming presence at the back. 7

Virgil van Dijk Rightly frustrated after the referee failed to award a penalty despite Ivanovic clearly holding the Saints defender in an area. Solid performance. 7

Ryan Bertrand Received a warm welcome from the Chelsea supporters. Had the chance to score against his former club minutes before half-time, but Begovic made himself big to deny the defender. 7

Oriel Romeu Another player returning to his old ground and aside from an early booking, the Spanish midfielder did well. 6

Victor Wanyama A confident performance against a confidence-sapped Chelsea midfield. 6

Saido Mane He appeared to be fouled by Ramires but his dramatic fall didn’t help his cause. Ironically, he was booked for diving minutes later. Showed great composure to turn Terry and finish through Begovic’s legs. 8

Steven Davis The Southampton midfielder is known for his technique and he produced a superb long-range strike to equalize before half-time. 7

Dusan Tadic The Saints winger gave Ivanovic another uncomfortable afternoon with his pace and trickery. 7

Graziano Pelle Brilliant lay-off to tee up team-mate Davis. A constant nuisance for the Chelsea centre-halves. Capped his performance with a clinical 72nd-minute finish. 8
