Chelsea legend questions Jose Mourinho’s decision to bench Eden Hazard
Tony Cascarino says Jose Mourinho's decision to bench Eden Hazard was harsh
Tony Cascarino has questioned Jose Mourinho’s decision to bench Eden Hazard for Chelsea’s 2-0 win against Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
The Blues boss omitted the reigning PFA player of the year from his starting line-up for the visit of Tim Sherwood’s struggling side in west London.
e’s such a big influence at Chelsea. If you want to play a style and you need someone to make a difference, he’s your guy
The defending Premier League champions ended their recent goalless run thanks to Diego Costa’s strike and Alan Hutton’s own goal.
However, former Chelsea striker Cascarino believes Hazard is struggling as a result of the west London outfit’s poor form in their opening nine Premier League games of the season.
“Hazard is not performing like he did last year when he was voted PFA player of the year,” Cascarino told Sky Sports. “He was sensational. I think he’s found it hard this year because the team are not playing as well. I look at him and think ‘Really? Substitute?’
“I think it’s harsh. He’s such a big influence at Chelsea. If you want to play a style and you need someone to make a difference, he’s your guy. Hazard can make things happen.”
Hazard has made two assists in nine Premier League appearances this season.
The 24-year-old forward has scored 14 goals in 38 top-flight appearances for the west London outfit last term as the Blues won their fourth Premier League title.
Chelsea travel to Dinamo Kyiv in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
