Chelsea have confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Marco Amelia on a free transfer.

The Blues have moved to bring in extra cover between the posts after Thibaut Courtois has been ruled out of action for a number of months with a serious knee injury.

The Italian shot-stopper has signed a contract with the west London club until the end of the season.

The experienced goalkeeper joined Serie B side Perugia last season having previously spent four years with AC Milan.

He began his career with Roma before making his name with Livorno, enjoying subsequent spells with Palermo and Genoa.

The 33-year-old will wear the number 32 jersey for the Blues, and could be included in the Chelsea squad to face Aston Villa in the Premier League after the international break.

The news comes after Chelsea were linked with a transfer swoop for out-of-favour Manchester United goalkeeper Victor Valdes in recent weeks.
