CSKA Moscow 1 Man Utd 1: Player ratings as Anthony Martial nets

Player ratings as Manchester United draw 1-1 with CSKA Moscow in the Champions League

Manchester United

David De Gea Did well to parry Roman Eremenko’s penalty onto the post but could do little to stop Seydou Doumbia from converting the rebound. Recovered well in acrobatic style to deny Ahmed Musa from distance after being out of position. Was forced into a good save in the second half after with Eremenko once again baring down on goal to deny the hosts the opportunity to double their advantage. 6/10

Phil Jones Tried to be proactive and push for a higher defensive line. Was caught napping when Doumbia scored off the penalty rebound and was exposed by CSKA’s ruthless counter-attacks in the first half. Looked much more solid in the second half and had the confidence to go on the front foot in the following 45 minutes. 5.5

Chris Smalling Mostly composed and assured in defence although he had his work cut out for the first half. Had much more of a physical presence in the second period and kept Moscow’s attack largely at bay. 5.5

Marcos Rojo Almost played as a second winger and was as caught out of position on numerous occasions as the CSKA attackers sought to expose his flank. Could have given away a penalty the ball hit his arm after completely misjudging a header from a Shennikov cross. 5

Antonio Valencia (Man of the match) Was United’s best player on the pitch. Was dangerous in attack and composed in defence, and largely kept the rapid Musa at bay. Provided the assist off the cross for Martial’s equaliser. 8

Bastian Schweinsteiger Despite completing more passes than any other player in the first half, he failed to create any chances for attackers in the final third. Was subbed off for Fellaini at half-time. 5

Morgan Schneiderlin Afforded the CSKA midfielders too much space to launch successive counter-attacks in the first half. Much more composed in the second, combining well with his teammates. 5.5

Jessie Lingard Looked lively and proved too hot to handle at times as his speed and trickery was a bright spark for a lacklustre United outfit. Guilty of overplaying in the final third. Was substituted for Depay. 7

Ander Herrera The Spaniard was largely ineffective throughout the match as CSKA’s disciplined defence forced him to drop back deeper than his usual No10 position in order to find space on the ball. Picked up a yellow card with 10 minutes to go with an unnecessary diving challenged on Doumbia. 5

Anthony Martial Poor Discipline in defence saw the starlet concede a penalty after handling the ball in the area in the first half. His good form in front of goal continued, though, when he headed home spectacularly off Valencia’s cross on the right flank. 6

Wayne Rooney Despite a few half chances, the England international cut a peripheral figure and was largely starved of service in the first half. Had a good chance off a header in the 60th-minute mark, but was denied by Igor Akinfeev. 5.5

Marouane Fellaini Unlike Schweinsteiger, sought to take command of the match and pushed into advanced positions. Was a great aerial presence and played a key part as United dominated proceedings in the second half. Was booked in the dying stages of the half. 5.5

Daley Blind Did not have much to contend with after replacing Rojo in the 63rd minute. Nevertheless, he gave his side a more assured defensive presence down the left flank. 5

Memphis Depay N/A
