Darren Fletcher played with some Manchester United greats during a 12-year career at Old Trafford.

The Scotland international played with great United midfielders like Paul Scholes, often hailed as one of England’s most-technical players and 13-time Premier League winner Ryan Giggs.

Fletcher was also team-mates with England’s all-time record goal-scorer and one of United’s greatest-ever players, Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored 84 times in 196 Premier League games.

But the 31-year-old, who joined West Bromwich Albion from United in January, revealed that former United captain and Republic of Ireland international Roy Keane had the best first touch during his playing days at Old Trafford.

Speaking to Graham Hunter in The Big Interview podcast, Fletcher said: “Roy Keane was one of the best passers of the ball I’ve ever seen.

“In terms of his touch and the pace in which he’d pass the ball forward and always pass it forward and broke the lines of the opposition quickly. He was the best at that. At breaking the opposition’s line and getting attacking players on to a transition.”

Fletcher went on to discuss how he managed to secure a first-team place in a United midfield containing greats like Keane and Scholes.

“You’ve got to find yourself a role in the team. I came into the team as a right winger – and I’m not a right winger – but I had to do a job for the team, which I did.

“Then eventually I started to play in central midfield and I looked to the side of me and I had Roy Keane and Paul Scholes.

“I realised quickly that I’m going to have to be the legs of this team; the water carrier; the one who’ll set the tempo and get the ball back and drag opponents away to let those two play.”

Fletcher won four Premier League titles, the FA Cup and the Champions League during his United career.
