David De Gea may have been an Atletico Madrid youth player when Manchester United last won the Champions League, but the goalkeeper is calling upon the spirit of 2008 to help the current side secure victory in Moscow on Wednesday.

The 20-time English champions head to Russia in search of back-to-back Champions League wins after United responded to an opening day defeat by PSV Eindhoven with 2-1 victory over Wolfsburg earlier this month.

De Gea hasn’t reached a European final since his move to Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid in 2011, but the Red Devils goalkeeper appears to have his sights firmly set on emulating Sir Alex Ferguson’s final Champions League-winning squad.

United have lost their last three away games in the UEFA Champions League proper, although they did win 4-0 at Club Brugge KV in the play-offs.

CSKA Moscow v Man Utd: Match facts

• United have won only one of seven matches, home and away, against Russian opposition.

• Ryan Giggs, their assistant manager, was in the United team beaten in a penalty shoot-out by FC Torpedo Moskva on the club’s first visit to Moscow for a 1992/93 UEFA Cup first-round tie (aggregate 0-0).

• United won their third European Cup at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium in 2008, beating Chelsea on penalties in a match which Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick started.

• Rooney is the only survivor of United’s 2-1 defeat by FC Zenit in the 2008 UEFA Super Cup.
