Harry Redknapp: Arsenal fan favourite almost joined Tottenham

Harry Redknapp reveals that Santi Cazorla came close to joining Tottenham ahead of Arsenal in 2012

Harry Redknapp has revealed that Santi Cazorla came within a whisker of joining Tottenham ahead of Arsenal back in 2012.

The Spaniard has firmly established himself as an Arsenal fan favourite at Emirates Stadium since his transfer to the north London club from Malaga back in August 2012.

Cazorla moved to Emirates Stadium in a reported £15m deal and has since been a regular fixture in Arsene Wenger’s first team.

However, former Spurs boss Redknapp has revealed that Arsenal’s local rivals were also keen on snapping up the Spanish playmaker that summer.

Redknapp is quoted as saying by the London Evening Standard: “Santi Cazorla was very nearly a Tottenham player well before he joined Arsenal in 2012.

“He was fantastic against us for Villarreal in a pre-season friendly in July 2010.

“I went up to Everton to watch him play again a week later and then we spoke to Villarreal.

“Santi wanted to come. He was happy to join Spurs but there was a breakdown in talks over the fee.

The deal was almost done but it got lost somewhere in the negotiations between Tottenham and Villarreal.

“It was a transfer that could and should have been done. He ended up being another one who got away.”

Arsenal, who are currently fourth in the Premier League, return to top-flight action when they host leaders Manchester United at Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

The Gunners head into the game knowing that a victory would take them level on points with Louis van Gaal’s men heading into the international break.
