Harry Redknapp has branded Mesut Ozil as “pathetic” after Arsenal’s shock 3-2 loss to Olympiacos in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
Arsene Wenger’s men slumped to their second successive defeat in Europe’s elite club competition in front of their home fans at Emirates Stadium in midweek.
And former Tottenham boss Redknapp has blamed Ozil for Arsenal conceding their first goal Ozil in the 32nd minute from a corner.
Redknapp told the London Evening Standard: “Watch Ozil coming out to try to get a block on the first goal – it was pathetic.
“The ball comes out to the edge of the box and he makes the most half-hearted effort to close it down.
“If someone is going to shoot from the edge of the box, you want your midfielders and defenders to throw themselves at it to do everything for the team, whether you cost £4m or £42m.”
Arsenal now face back-to-back showdowns against Bayern Munich next and realistically need to win at least one of the games to progress to the last 16.
Ozil will be expecting to feature when Arsenal take on Manchester United in the Premier League at Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Gunners head into the clash knowing that victory over the Red Devils would move them level on points with Louis van Gaal’s men heading into the forthcoming international break.
