Jamie Carragher: My pick for Liverpool’s player of the season so far
Jamie Carragher says that Danny Ings has been one of Liverpool's players of the season
Jamie Carragher believes that Danny Ings has been one of Liverpool’s players of the season so far this term.
The 23-year-old forward, who joined the Merseyside outfit from Burnley back in June, has scored one goal in four Premier League appearances for Brendan Rodgers’ men so far this season.
Ings came off the bench to score and earn a point for the Reds during the 1-1 draw with Norwich City at Anfield last month.
And Carragher has been impressed by what he has seen from the striker since his arrival at the Merseyside club.
Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Sunday’s Merseyside derby, Carragher said: “Christian Benteke has been the big-money signing – he is out at the moment – but you could argue that Danny Ings has been Liverpool’s best player this season.
“Every time he has come on, he has made an impact, he has got goals, and there looked like there was a little link there with Sturridge.
“It is early days, but Sturridge coming back and getting the goal, Ings with his pressing and closing down, his chasing things in behind, and also very good on the ball – subtle touches, he set up Sturridge for his hat-trick with a fantastic flick round the corner – so there were signs.
“It is early days, but if Liverpool are to win this derby game, then they will need those two to be on top form.”
Everton have not beaten Liverpool in the last nine attempts in the league heading into Sunday’s clash.
Liverpool’s only defeat in the 17 most recent league meetings came at Goodison Park in October 2010, while five of the last six games between the two sides have ended in draws.
