Jamie Carragher says Chelsea would be making a serious mistake if the Blues sacked Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese is walking a managerial tightrope after a miserable run of one victory in their last seven games in all competitions.

Ask yourself, however, why they would be delighted: it is because he is good, the best manager Chelsea have ever had

The League Cup holders crashed out of the competition on Tuesday night after losing to Stoke City on penalties at Britannia Stadium.

And the defending Premier League champions host Jurgen Klopp’s rejuvenated Liverpool side looking to avoid a sixth league defeat of the season.

But Carragher believes Mourinho’s critics only want the Chelsea manager to be sacked because the 52-year-old is one of the best in the world.

“They would be making a serious mistake. If Chelsea lose and the axe falls on Jose Mourinho, what would they hope to achieve by changing their manager once more?” Carragher wrote in his Daily Mail column.

“Less hassle and better results would be the simple answer. Many people are enjoying seeing how Mourinho is embroiled in the worst run of the Roman Abramovich era, and should Liverpool win at Stamford Bridge on Saturday the general feeling away from the King’s Road will be delight if he is sacked.

“Ask yourself, however, why they would be delighted: it is because he is good, the best manager Chelsea have ever had. If he is sent on his way by Abramovich at this point of the season, Chelsea will be weaker and their rivals’ chances of success will automatically be improved.”

Chelsea are in 15th place in the Premier League table and 11 points behind leaders Manchester City after a return of 11 points from 10 games.
