Johnny Giles: Man United are more honest side than Arsenal
The former Man United midfielder says Louis van Gaal has control over his players
Johnny Giles believes Manchester United are outperforming Arsenal in the Premier League thanks to their honest work-rate.
The Red Devils can return to the top of the table if Louis van Gaal’s side can beat their bitter rivals at The Emirates on Sunday afternoon.
Louis van Gaal has the ability to get the players to do what he wants them to do
United are three points clear of sixth-placed Arsenal after seven games, and the Red Devils have won their last five matches in all competitions.
Former Republic of Ireland international Giles believes Van Gaal has the respect of his players even if his tactics and methods are questionable.
“They are winning. There is no lack of effort in the way they play,” Giles told Newstalk’s Off The Ball show.
“Louis van Gaal has the ability to get the players to do what he wants them to do.
“A lot of the time I wouldn’t agree with what he does and I’m sure the players don’t, but he has this control to get the players to follow him.
“There is an honesty about them that we don’t see at Arsenal.”
Former United midfielder Giles believes there is more to come from Van Gaal’s side before he added that the 20-time English champions are top of the table by virtue of their rivals’s poor form.
“They’re not the finished product. They’re getting there, but you wouldn’t say they’re a long-term bet,” Giles added.
“They are on top of the league because Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool aren’t doing their stuff. They aren’t doing it like Chelsea did it last year. They’re not convincing in what they’re doing.”
United can hoist themselves above current leaders Manchester City if Van Gaal’s men can beat Arsenal.
