Johnny Giles: Why Man United should play Juan Mata at No10
Johnny Giles runs rule over Manchester United playmaker Juan Mata
Juan Mata is Manchester United’s most creative player, according to former Red Devil Johnny Giles.
The Spain international inspired Louis van Gaal’s side to a 2-1 victory over Wolfsburg in the Champions League on Wednesday night after he scored a first-half penalty before he created Chris Smalling’s winner.
Mata, who moved to United in a then club-record £37.1m deal from Chelsea in January 2014, has also impressed in the Premier League, too, scoring three goals in United’s past three games as well as making two assists.
And former United midfielder Giles explained why Mata is outperforming Red Devils skipper Wayne Rooney and Van Gaal should consider playing the midfielder in the centre of the park.
“He is the form player for Man United,” Giles told Newstalk’s Off The Ball.
“He is restricted a little bit for what he can do. He is out on the right. He is doing a lot from that position but I would play him in the centre.
“Mata is their best chance to create things in the middle of the field. He would do better.”
Mata has scored three goals in seven Premier League games for the 20-time English champions this season.
United face Arsenal at The Emirates in the English top-flight on Sunday afternoon.
