The Red Devils head to Goodison Park looking to return to winning ways in the Premier League after the disappointment of their 3-0 loss to Arsenal in their most recent top-flight outing.
Louis van Gaal’s men head into the game third in the Premier League table and two points behind leaders and local rivals Manchester City.
And Mata, who was voted United’s player of the month for September last week, has warned his team-mates that they will have to step up their game if they are to beat the Toffees this weekend.
Mata told MUTV: “You always have to try to learn from mistakes. We know we need to be better in the first 15 or 20 minutes in every game.
“It wasn’t just the Arsenal game but a few other games as well. So we need to improve that.
“That last experience in the league was not good enough, especially the way we started the game. We know that must change against Everton. It’s a difficult stadium to play at but we have to be ready because we want the three points.
“It’s a small pitch with a tough atmosphere. Everton start with intensity and fight for every ball so we have to be prepared for that. Last season was not a good game there and now we have a chance to change our record against them.
“They have a good manager and players who have played together for a long time now. We have seen that big teams like Chelsea went there and didn’t have an easy game.
“Against Arsenal we didn’t create enough chances but so far this season I think we have done well with creating chances.
“When we went to Arsenal we were top of the league and doing a lot of things right so we have to go back in that direction and get back to the top.”
The 27-year-old Spaniard has made eight Premier League appearances so far this season, scoring three goals and making three assists for his team-mates.
He has also featured twice in the Champions League group stage for the Red Devils.
