Jurgen Klopp says Roberto Firmino has nothing to prove to the Liverpool manager.

The Brazil international scooped the man of the match award after an influential performance in a 1-0 victory over Bournemouth in the League Cup fourth round at Anfield on Wednesday night.

He is ready, he is prepared for this league for sure, he is physically strong and a good technician – everything you saw. And usually he is a good finisher! He is a good player

Firmino has endured an injury-hit start to his Liverpool career after having made just four starts in the Premier League following a £29m summer move to the Reds from Hoffenheim.

And Klopp, who was appointed as Liverpool’s new manager earlier this month, explained why he believes the 24-year-old Brazilian midfielder is a very good player.

“It is important for a new player when he comes to a new club to show this, but he doesn’t have to show me anything because I know him very well,” Klopp told his post-match media conference.

“We all now know a little bit more about him and that’s important. It was very intensive for him tonight and if we hadn’t had to make a change in the first half with Kolo, we would have changed him [Firmino] a little earlier.

“We had to wait because maybe we would have to go into extra-time, so it was not easy [for him] but he worked really hard.

“He is ready, he is prepared for this league for sure, he is physically strong and a good technician – everything you saw. And usually he is a good finisher! He is a good player.”

Nathaniel Clyne scored a first-half winner for the Reds to secure their second victory over Bournemouth this season and set up a League Cup quarter-final clash against the defender’s former club Southampton at St Mary’s.
