Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Petr Cech will start in goal for Arsenal in their League Cup fourth round clash with Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night.

Second-choice goalkeeper David Ospina returned from international duty with Colombia with a shoulder problem and has not recovered in time for this weekend’s clash.

Wenger also confirmed that defender Per Mertesacker is back available for selection after recovering from illness, while midfielder Mikel Arteta is still sidelined after missing the weekend’s 2-1 win over Everton at Emirates Stadium.

Wenger told Arsenal’s website: “Ospina is still out, so Cech will certainly play.

“There are no new problems from Saturday, Per Mertesacker is available again after illness.

“Nobody else is coming back. Arteta will not be fit. [Aaron] Ramsey, [Jack] Wilshere, [Danny] Welbeck and [Tomas] Rosicky of course are all out, too.”

Arsenal head into the game on the back of their victory over the Toffees in north London. That win moved Wenger’s men level on points with leaders Manchester City, who moved above the Gunners on goal difference after their goalless draw with Manchester United on Sunday.

The north London side travel to Swansea City in the Premier League next weekend looking to keep up their recent fine form.
