Liverpool have sacked manager Brendan Rodgers with immediate effect in the wake of Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Everton in the Merseyside derby.

The Northern Irishman was relieved of his duties on Sunday afternoon with the Reds in 10th place in the Premier League table and six points behind leaders Manchester City.

“Although this has been a difficult decision, we believe it provides us with the best opportunity for success on the pitch,” said a club statement.

“The search for a new manager is underway and we hope to make an appointment in a decisive and timely manner.”
