Liverpool 1 Southampton 1: Player ratings

Player ratings as Southampton peg back Liverpool with late leveller

By Owen Fulda

Simon Mignolet Quiet game, performed well when called on and wasn’t at fault for the goal. 7/10

Alberto Moreno Given a tough task to create the width on the left flank. Got forward well but wasted good opportunities and was exposed at times in defence. 7

Martin Skrtel Given a bigger test by Mane than Sakho was but did well to limit any threat on goal. 7

Mamadou Sakho Was solid both on the ground and in the air although looks like a newborn deer when on the ball. 6

Nathaniel Clyne Did well going forward but was caught out a couple of times in defence. Looked inexperienced at times but also showed potential. 7

Emre Can Looks majestic on the ball, creates space and has a great touch and eye for a pass. Ask him to move however and it looks like someone has dipped his boots in concrete. 7

Lucas Leiva Master of the dark arts of central midfield. Gave excellent protection to the back four, and for once, got away without a yellow card. 8

James Milner Kept busy without much end product, good ball into box for the goal. 7

Adam Lallana Found it hard to impose himself on the game, didn’t threaten and wasn’t able to provide a link between midfield and attack before being withdrawn. 6

Philippe Coutinho Looked like a threat in the first half and early in the second but has developed a tendency to fade out of games. 7

Divock Origi Was happy to chase and make runs but couldn’t get into the game and saw less of the ball than any other player in the first half. 5

Christian Benteke Team looked different once he was on, held the ball up well and scored a great goal but overall starved of service. 8

Roberto Firmino Looked lively when he came on, was happy to drop deep to pick up the ball and take the game to the opposition, encouraging. 7

Maarten Stekelenburg Barely had a save to make all afternoon until Benteke’s header sailed past him into the top corner. 6

Ryan Bertrand Confident display from the former Chelsea left-back. Tenacious in the tackle and quick to burst forward whenever in possession. 7

Jose Fonte Beaten in the air by Benteke for the goal but that aside had a fairly quiet afternoon. Clever flick-on in the build up to his side’s equaliser. 6

Virgil van Dijk Dominated in the air and cooly repelled virtually everything Jurgen Klopp’s men threw at him. Had a guilt-edged chance to score with his head which Mignolet saved. 8

Cedric Soares Worked tirelessly for the cause making interceptions and tackles all over the pitch. Even created a couple of chances from right-back. 8

Victor Wanyama Patrolled the midfield like a jet-propelled tank, even managing to nutmeg Milner. Excellent display from Kenyan. 7

Steven Davis Put in a shift but was essentially anonymous for most of the match. Substituted with ten minutes to go. 6

Dusan Tadic Not one of his more influential perfromances by any stretch of the imagination. Most memorable moment was doing four step-overs while the ball remained stationary. Subbed. 5

Sadio Mane Tapped in the equaliser having been a live-wire all game, even finding energy to track back and reclaim possession. Stupidly sent-off after receiving two yellow cards in the last four minutes. 6

Jordy Clasie Looked off the pace after an injury-hit start to his Saints career. Will be much more in tune with his teammates with a couple more games under his belt. Subbed with 15 minutes left. 6

Graziano Pelle Classic air-shot when put clean through by Ramirez pretty much summed up his day. 5

James Ward-Prowse Fantastic prospect but not at his best today. Put a nice free-kick in to the box which lead to Mane’s goal however. 6

Juanmi Looked ponderous in possession and brushed off the ball easily by Clyne. 5

Gaston Ramirez First start for Saints in over a year and showed some neat touches and vision. 6
