Liverpool transfers: Reds’ offer for Schalke star confirmed
Liverpool made an offer to sign Leroy Sane, according to Schalke chief Horst Heldt
Liverpool made an offer to sign Leroy Sane in the summer but the teenager was not interested in a move to Anfield, according to Schalke director Horst Heldt.
The Reds were reported to be interested in bringing the highly-rated 19-year-old to Merseyside as Brendan Rodgers looked to bolter his attacking options at Anfield.
However, a move failed to materialise and the winger ended up staying with the German side beyond the summer.
Now, Schalke chief Heldt has revealed that Liverpool were among a number of top European clubs who expressed an interest in signing Sane during the summer transfer window.
“There was one or more prestigious club that contacted us about Sane,” Heldt told Bild. “Liverpool was ready to pay money for him.
“These offers didn’t at all interest us or the player. I am really not concerned about losing the player.
“Two years ago, Ajax made an offer as well.”
Sane has already scored three goals in seven Bundesliga games for Schalke so far this season.
Liverpool are in Europa League action against FC Sion at Anfield on Thursday night as they look to notch up their first win of their European campaign. They then take on Everton in the Premier League on Sunday.
