Louis van Gaal says some members of his Manchester United squad are suffering with fatigue ahead of their clash against Middlesbrough on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils will be without Luke Shaw, Antonio Valencia and Paddy McNair due to injury for the League Cup fourth-round clash at Old Trafford.

The 20-time English champions have already played 16 games in all competitions this season as United continue to battle on three different fronts.

However, United manager Van Gaal appeared to hint that he would rest some first-team players for the visit of Boro with fatigue becoming an issue.

“I have a lot of players in the red zone because we have had a lot of matches and we have a lot of matches to play,” Van Gaal told his pre-match media conference.

“I have to see if I can use them or not. We need all the days to recover at this moment.”

The Red Devils played out a goalless draw with bitter rivals Manchester City in Sunday’s derby at Old Trafford.

The 20-time English champions are in fourth place in the Premier League table but just two points behind the Citizens.
