Louis van Gaal says Manchester United must be patient with Anthony Martial.

The 19-year-old was named PFA player of the month for September after a whirlwind start to his United career.

We have to be patient with him. He is still 19 years old and he cannot do that every match

Martial scored on his debut in a 3-1 win against Liverpool at Old Trafford before the French teenager netted a brace in a 3-2 victory over Southampton at St Mary’s.

And Van Gaal, whose Red Devils side are in third place in the Premier League, is happy Martial has already started to justify his £36m price tag.

“I’m very pleased he’s started so well. It’s also good because most of the fans didn’t know him – now they know him and also a little bit about his qualities and talent,” Van Gaal told his pre-match media conference.

“Still, we have to be patient with him. He is still 19 years old and he cannot do that every match. That is also a characteristic of a young player.”

Europe’s most-expensive teenager could line up against Everton at Goodison Park in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

Martial joined the 20-time English champions in a £36m deal from Ligue 1 side Monaco after having scored 12 times in 52 appearances in the French top-flight.

The United striker failed to score in a 3-1 defeat by Arsenal at Emirates Stadium before the international break.
