Man United transfers: Louis van Gaal hints at January signing
Louis van Gaal hints that he could bring in cover at left-back during the January transfer window
Louis van Gaal has hinted that Manchester United will look to bring in defensive reinforcements in the January transfer window following Luke Shaw’s serious injury.
Shaw has been ruled out of action for a number of months after the left-back suffered a double fracture of his right leg during the Champions League defeat by PSV Eindhoven last month.
We don’t have a good substitute for Luke with the [same] qualities, so it is a big blow

Daley Blind, Matteo Darmian, Marcos Rojo and Ashley Young have all featured in Shaw’s position since the England international’s setback, with Van Gaal seemingly undecided about who can step into the position on a regular basis.
Now, the Dutchman has hinted that he could be forced to dip into the January transfer market as he looks to find a player capable of filling in on a regular basis.
Speaking at his post-match news conference after Manchester United’s 3-0 loss to Arsenal on Sunday, Van Gaal said: “We lost Luke Shaw and that is a big blow. I have said already in the first press conferences that this season shall be the season of Luke Shaw and he was the only position that we didn’t have double-occupied, so the circumstances are not so good.
“I have to look for solutions. You have seen that – I have tried it with Young, Darmian, Rojo and Blind – four players have played in that position after Shaw and we have won everything.
“But, in my opinion, we don’t have a good substitute for Luke with the [same] qualities, so it is a big blow.”
Sunday’s loss left United in third place in the Premier League table, two points behind leaders Manchester City.
