Matt Le Tissier: Juan Mata making the difference for Man United
The Saints legend explains why Juan Mata is proving key for Man United
Juan Mata is making the difference for Manchester United, according to Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier.
The Spain international equalised for the Red Devils after he successfully dispatched his first-half spot-kick to cancel out Wolfsburg’s second-minute opener.
The 26-year-old midfielder, who moved to United from Chelsea in 2014, teed up Chris Smalling for United’s winner with 38 minutes remaining at Old Trafford.
And former Southampton midfielder Le Tissier was impressed with Mata’s contribution in United’s first Champions League victory on Wednesday night.
“I thought Juan Mata was excellent all night. He looked a threat coming in from that right-hand side onto his stronger left foot and creating chances. He was probably the difference,” Le Tissier told Sky Sports.
“It was his brilliant flick that created the second goal for Chris Smalling. It was a fantastic bit of skill.
“The ball came to him at a really awkward height and he managed to get his leg up, flick it with the outside of his boot, and lob it beautifully over the Wolfsburg defence for Smalling, who guided it into the corner.”
United playmaker Mata moved to the 20-time English champions in a then club-record £37.1m deal from Chelsea in January 2014.
The Spain international has scored three goals and has made assists in seven Premier League games this term.
The former Chelsea midfielder has been a mainstay of Louis van Gaal’s side so far this season, racking up 585 top-flight minutes.
